LOCAL MAN BUILDS BRIDGES OF GRATITUDE

Oakland Tribune
Summer 1993

"But the inspector told DeSmidt there was no money to rebuild the bridges that connect the two sides of the trail through the canyon. So DeSmidt, a building contractor, struck a deal. 'You provide me with the materials, I'll rebuild them,' he told the city worker. And with $1,000 the city was allocated from the non-profit Friends of the Oakland Parks and Recreation Department, he has done just that."
